Fire Cider was one of the first herbal medicinals I learned how to make at the start of my herbalism journey. I was amazed at how a simple combination of ingredients made an awesome tasting tonic that could be used to address a variety of things going on in the body. Eventually I came to create my Pineapple Fire Cider recipe, which broke the fucking internet going viral several times. Can you tell I’m proud about that?
Fire Cider is a pungent herbal tonic that has been passed down for generations and was finally dubbed Fire Cider in 1997 by herbalist Rosemary Gladstar. It’s made using a variety of veggies and herbs, along with raw apple cider vinegar and raw honey. Fire Cider contains probiotics, helps boost immunity, fight off cold and flu, supports gut health.
Kitchen Hoodoo is in my blood, so being in the kitchen concocting ‘this and that’ came natural to me. With Fire Cider under my belt, each time I made it, that shit came alive and more flavorful as I played with the recipe. Before I knew, my family was asking for it all the time and I was making batches so large it kept us good all year.
One day I was making a batch of Elderberry Syrup and had extra oranges, lemons, and elderberries leftover, so it sparked the idea to make an oxymel. My original thought was an Elderberry Oxymel, but after standing in front of my apothecary cabinet for several minutes, the idea for a Spring Fire Cider just came to life.
I ran to the store and intuitively grabbed fruits that were in season. I grabbed Hibiscus, blueberries, strawberries, and pulled out my roses, some lavender, and calendula. My thought was to have a spicy floral tonic. And I did.
I’ve experimented each year, sometimes I toss in Goldenrod, Lemongrass, Raspberries, and Apples. The sky is the limit, really. I have fun creating new recipes but I always have my florals tossed in.
